Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School

Overview

Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School was founded in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 1951. Before the 2018-2019 school year started, the original building was torn down to make way for a brand new school on the same site. Tennessee Valley Metals was honored to play such an important role in this amazing $18.2 million project.

Tennessee Valley Metals provided an approximately 275-foot long two-level radius bus-loading area cover, as well as other various post and beam supported covers. The new school’s walkway covers feature 6 x 6 columns and Tennessee Valley Metals pan and cap decking. The overhead supported canopies are used over the school’s entry doors and feature 2-inch square overhead supports, an 8-inch tall fascia gutter, and extruded flat pan decking.

The project as a whole used walkway covers, overhead supported canopies, and sunshades, plus a mix of custom yellow, green, blue, and clear anodized finishes. The new Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School is an 82,000-square-foot building with two stories, 27 classrooms, and a capacity of 550 students. The project’s architect was Ellis Architects out of Tuscaloosa, and the general contractor was J.T. Harrison Construction Company.
