A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club
Birmingham, AL
Overview
After a surge in growth, the A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club in Birmingham, Alabama needed a new facility that added space and reflected the youth of its audience.
As the desire for a new clubhouse began to take shape, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice co-chaired fundraising efforts and even made a personal donation to the cause herself. Architecture firm Hendon + Huckestein Architects, PC and general contractor Brasfield & Gorrie teamed up to make the club’s dream a reality.
The new building, named the Walter Howlett, Jr. Clubhouse, included a custom engineered Tennessee Valley Metals canopy design. The canopy was constructed using all extruded aluminum materials and featured a custom powder coat finish on the 6×6 columns used for the canopy’s unique forward-leaning support system. The deck style was a TVM extruded pan and cap interlock system with an 8? tall extruded fascia profile around the perimeter.
Tennessee Valley Metals also provided standard-post supported canopies for the project, including one at the building’s main entrance. The dark bronze front entrance canopy supports the building name lettering and helps compliment the building’s blue and yellow color scheme.
The new facility, which was named after AGGBGC champion and former Board Chairman Walter J. Howlett, Jr., provides a variety of new features that the old clubhouse did not: a Teen Center, a gym, a café complete with a kitchen, a music room, a game room, and STREAM (science, technology, reading, engineering, art, and math) labs. The clubhouse’s location at Birmingham Crossplex increases their visibility and accessibility and offers easy access to the Birmingham Public Library for the kids. Additionally, the Boys and Girls Club can now serve double the number of children as before, going from a capacity of 250 to 500.
Tennessee Valley Metals is proud to be associated with the A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club clubhouse project. We wish the organization all the best in their new space!
